Judge Greg Mathis, presiding jurist of the nationally syndicated, reality-based court show “Judge Mathis”, spent the evening with guests at Fathers Incorporated 10th Anniversary Fundraising Gala. The event was held at the Alhambra Ballroom in Harlem on Tuesday, November 18, 2014.
As keynote speaker, Judge Mathis shared his inspirational life story with the same passion, tenacity, and authenticity that he brings to the show. When it comes to the challenges in life, he advised guest that teaching youth self-control, respect for self and others, sensitivity, honesty and navigating society with finesse are some of the keys to overcoming the obstacles when it comes to the challenges in life. “Sometimes fathers leave the home out of frustration. The issues of a dysfunctional educational system and the lack of jobs and opportunity are the same issues that were prevalent in the community when I was a teen as they are today,” says Mathis.
Mathis was moved by the great work being done by the organization and therefore got involved with Fathers Incorporated. “Through President Obama’s Fatherhood & Mentoring Initiative, they were one of the participating organizations having the greatest impact”, says Mathis. He also noted he was inspired by watching Terrie M. Williams with her commitment to advocacy work over years.
Making a connection with the community, Judge Mathis supports Fathers Incorporated’s Fatherhood Buzz, an event held with community partners, organizations, agencies and local barbershops around the country. Men join the conversation talking about their triumphs and challenges. “Of the more than 150 events, a buzz event took place right here in Harlem at Denny Moe’s Superstar Barbershop. It gave me the opportunity to speak with fathers as well as sons right here in Harlem,” says Mathis. “
